The ballad of gaol5/10/2023 (although, if you had purchased the signed third edition, you knew very well who the author was). It wasn’t until the 7th edition, which appeared 16 months after the first edition, that Wilde’s name was added below C.3.3. The third edition, of 99 numbered copies ‘signed by the author’ was issued along with a fourth edition of 1,200 unsigned set. The first edition, issued on 13 February 1889, of 800 copies sold out in a week the second edition of 1000 copies sold just as quickly. The poem, due to Wilde’s notoriety, could not be issued under his name. The author was given simply as C.3.3., which stood for cell block C, landing 3, cell 3, Wilde’s cell. His stories and plays have a constant following The Importance of Being Ernest is once again on the London stage this season, but now, as has become the model, with Lady Bracknell being played, as the reverse of a trouser role, by David Suchet.Īt the time of his sentencing, Wilde was placed in Reading Prison, and after he had moved to France, the anonymous poem “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” was printed. The Seven Crystal Balls by Hergé5/10/2023 He is best known for creating The Adventures of Tintin, the series of comic albums which are considered one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century. Georges Prosper Remi (1907 – 1983), known by the pen name Hergé, from the French pronunciation of his initials, was a Belgian cartoonist. The story revolves around the investigations of a young reporter Tintin and his friend Captain Haddock into the abduction of their friend Professor Calculus and its connection to a mysterious illness which has afflicted the members of an archaeological expedition to Peru. After he was cleared two years later, the story was then serialised weekly in the new Tintin magazine from September 1946 to April 1948. The story was cancelled abruptly following the Allied liberation in September 1944, when Hergé was blacklisted after being accused of collaborating with the occupying Germans. The story was serialised daily in Le Soir, Belgium's leading francophone newspaper, from December 1943 amidst the German occupation of Belgium during World War II. The Seven Crystal Balls (Les Sept Boules de Cristal in French) is the thirteenth volume of The Adventures of Tintin, the comics series by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. We love this series of Tintin cover posters, in Hergé's distinct ligne claire drawing style, and in the original French as Hergé designed them. The novels are written in the form of a diary by Josephine, interspersed with letters to her from Napoleon and others. in Sandra Gulland’s trilogy about Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon. Using the law of mass action it can predict the future, but only on large scales. The story follows that mathematician Hari Seldon has spent his life working on developing a branch of mathematics known as psychhistory. As such it has been suggested that in order to read in the correct chronological order the Robot and then Empire series should be read first. The Foundation Series is also closely tied with two other of Asimov's series, the Robot and Empire Series (and also Asimov's first ever novel "Pebble in the Sky") - which are all set in the same single unified universe (with the Robot and Empire series set much earlier chronologically). The short story called The Mule that forms part of the foundation novel (the first in the series) also won a retrospective Hugo award in 1996. In 1965 the original Foundation trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation) fought off a number of influential series including JRR Tolkiens Lord of The Rings to win a special Hugo Award for Best All-Time Series, to this day it is the only series to win such an award. The series consists of seven volumes spanning 500 years and although part of a series, can be read as stand alone stories. The Foundation Series is an award winning epic science fiction collection of novels by the legendary Author Isaac Asimov. The treasure chest packaging and hardcover books make the collection stand out from just a usual box set. Zuboff's comprehensive and moving analysis lays bare the threats to twenty-first century society: a controlled "hive" of total connection that seduces with promises of total certainty for maximum profit - at the expense of democracy, freedom, and our human future. Here is the crucible of an unprecedented form of power marked by extreme concentrations of knowledge and free from democratic oversight. The threat has shifted from a totalitarian Big Brother state to a ubiquitous digital architecture: a "Big Other" operating in the interests of surveillance capital. Vast wealth and power are accumulated in ominous new "behavioral futures markets," where predictions about our behavior are bought and sold, and the production of goods and services is subordinated to a new "means of behavioral modification." Zuboff vividly brings to life the consequences as surveillance capitalism advances from Silicon Valley into every economic sector. The stakes could not be higher: a global architecture of behavior modification threatens human nature in the twenty-first century just as industrial capitalism disfigured the natural world in the twentieth. In this masterwork of original thinking and research, Shoshana Zuboff provides startling insights into the phenomenon that she has named surveillance capitalism. The challenges to humanity posed by the digital future, the first detailed examination of the unprecedented form of power called "surveillance capitalism," and the quest by powerful corporations to predict and control our behavior. Escape from hell larry niven5/9/2023 In fact, much of his writing since the 1970s has been in collaboration, particularly with Pournelle, Steven Barnes, Brenda Cooper, or Edward M. He co-authored a number of novels with Jerry Pournelle. Niven created an alien species, the Kzin, which were featured in a series of twelve collection books, the Man-Kzin Wars. His fantasy includes The Magic Goes Away series, which utilizes an exhaustible resource, called Mana, to make the magic a non-renewable resource. Niven also often includes elements of detective fiction and adventure stories. The creation of thoroughly worked-out alien species, which are very different from humans both physically and mentally, is recognized as one of Niven's main strengths. His work is primarily hard science fiction, using big science concepts and theoretical physics. Laurence van Cott Niven's best known work is Ringworld(Ringworld, #1) (1970), which received the Hugo, Locus, Ditmar, and Nebula awards. Close Program Holiday Entertaining with Martha Stewart Program Description Casino Royale by Ian Fleming5/9/2023 The second, rather spookily resonant, feature of the plot is the attempted termination of Russian agents, an exotic activity that once again seems to be flavour of the month. There are poised and leggy ladies too, most of whom can be seduced with the right amount of tough talk, caviar, champagne and, somewhat mysteriously, avocado pear served as a pudding. Consequently, the playboy Fleming's own interest in gambling is mined for detail throughout, with industrial loads of card-sharpery and hefty slabs of mathematical analysis of 'playing the tables'. Bond has been charged by M with the unlikely secret mission of humiliating the communist-backed le Chiffre by defeating him at the gaming tables. Gambling debt and casino life, currently undergoing a renaissance in this country, are the modish concerns of both our hero, 007, and our arch-villain, the stateless le Chiffre.
